Profinet is a bus system that defines the communication between controller/supervisor and the respective input and output peripheral devices.

The system is made of multiple islands interconnected to each other. They can be connected via three types of channels, i.e. wireless network, optic fibre or copper cable.

Copper PROFINET cables can be divided into two macrotypes:

– 2 star quad pairs in AWG22;

The most compact and common in the market.

– 4 individually twisted pairs in AWG23 (Type A/B) or AWG24 (Type C);

Used in specific cases in which a very high volume of data is required.

There is also another division depending on the cable’s dynamic/application characteristics:

  • Type A, Rigid cable (single wire) for static installation applications.
  • Type B, Flexible cable (7 strand conductor) for static installations, vibrations or occasional movements.
  • Type C, Very flexible cable (7 or 19 strand conductor) for frequent dynamic applications.

RJ45 and M12 are used for interconnections.
